Why Rent a Car in Berat?
Mangalem, Gorica, the riverside promenade and parts of central Berat are best explored on foot. A car becomes more useful when your accommodation is outside the centre, when you are travelling with luggage or when you want to include Berat in a longer Albanian road trip.
A rental car can help you:
- arrive from Tirana, Tirana International Airport, Durrës or another city;
- reach accommodation outside the historic centre;
- visit wineries, villages and cultural destinations around Berat;
- combine Berat with Apollonia, Vlorë, Gjirokastër or other permitted destinations;
- carry luggage, children's equipment or outdoor gear;
- arrange a one-way return when the selected supplier permits it.
If your visit is focused only on the historic centre, you may not need a vehicle every day. Consider parking outside the narrowest heritage streets and exploring Mangalem, Gorica and the castle area on foot.
Where Can You Pick Up a Rental Car in Berat?
The exact collection point depends on the selected vehicle and supplier. It may be a rental office, an agreed meeting point or delivery to a confirmed address. Berat does not have a commercial passenger airport, so a Berat city booking is separate from pickup at Tirana International Airport.
Before booking, verify:
- the stated pickup location;
- whether hotel or address delivery is available;
- any delivery or out-of-hours charge;
- the supplier's working hours;
- the return location and time;
- the meeting instructions in the voucher.
Do not assume collection at your hotel, bus terminal, castle or another landmark is included unless it is explicitly confirmed for the selected offer.
Choosing the Right Car for Berat
Compact Cars
A compact car is usually convenient for city traffic, ordinary paved roads and parking. It can suit couples or small groups, but check luggage capacity before booking.
Automatic Cars
Automatic transmission can make hills, traffic and frequent stops more comfortable. Availability may be more limited during busy travel periods, so reserve early if an automatic is important.
Family Cars and Minivans
Choose according to both passenger and luggage capacity. A vehicle advertised for five people may not hold five large suitcases. Add child seats and any additional driver during booking when available.
SUVs and Crossovers
An SUV may offer more space or ground clearance, but it does not grant permission to use unpaved, mountain or prohibited routes. The rental agreement and written supplier approval determine where the car may be driven.

For a complete explanation, see the guide on how car rental booking works in Albania.
Car Rental in Berat Without a Deposit
Some cars may be offered without a security deposit, but this is an individual offer condition rather than a guarantee for every rental in Berat.
Use the deposit filter when available and verify that the selected vehicle shows a zero deposit. Check the insurance excess separately. A no-deposit offer may still include an excess, exclusions or responsibility for damage outside the protection terms.
See the dedicated no-deposit car rental in Albania page for additional guidance.
Renting Without a Credit Card
Some Berat offers may allow a debit card or cash for the balance or deposit. Accepted payment methods vary by supplier and vehicle.
“Without a credit card” does not automatically mean:
- no bank card is required for the online advance;
- the rental has no deposit;
- every debit card is accepted;
- the payment card can belong to another person;
- the entire rental can be paid in cash.
Read the payment conditions for the exact offer before checkout. See the Albania car rental without a credit card page for further explanation.
Documents Required at Pick-Up
The main driver will generally need:
- a valid original driving licence;
- a passport or accepted identity document;
- the booking voucher;
- the payment method specified in the selected offer.
Minimum age and driving-experience requirements vary by car. An International Driving Permit or official translation may be required depending on the issuing country and licence format. Confirm the rules before travelling.
Inspecting the Vehicle
Inspect the car before leaving the collection point. Photograph or record the body, windows, wheels, tyres and interior. Make sure every existing mark appears in the handover report.
Confirm:
- the fuel level and mileage;
- the correct fuel type;
- booked extras and child seats;
- the agreed return time and location;
- the supplier's emergency contact;
- road and territorial restrictions;
- what to do after an accident, breakdown or tyre problem.
Ask the representative to correct any discrepancy before departure. Document the vehicle again when returning it.
Driving in Berat
Traffic around central Berat can include pedestrians, bicycles, scooters, buses and vehicles stopping unexpectedly. Historic streets may be narrow, steep or unsuitable for through traffic. Avoid entering restricted or pedestrian areas even if navigation suggests a shortcut.
Drive patiently and follow current signs. Albania uses right-hand traffic. All occupants should wear seat belts, and the driver should avoid handheld phone use and alcohol.
Parking in Berat
Parking can be limited near Mangalem, Gorica, the riverside and access roads towards Berat Castle. Some spaces may be paid, time-limited, reserved or restricted by signs.
Before leaving the vehicle:
- read the sign for the exact street or facility;
- verify payment instructions and operating hours;
- confirm whether accommodation parking is guaranteed;
- avoid blocking narrow streets, gates, pavements and emergency access;
- keep any ticket or digital confirmation;
- use an established parking area when the rules are unclear.
Local parking rates and zones can change. A compact vehicle can be helpful, but it does not make restricted heritage streets legal to enter.
Driving to Berat Castle
Berat Castle remains an inhabited historic district with stone surfaces, slopes and narrow access. Vehicle access and parking arrangements can change or be limited.
Check current signs before driving uphill. Use a recognised parking area and complete the final section on foot when necessary. Do not block residents, entrances or emergency access. Comfortable footwear is useful for exploring inside the castle walls.
Fuel and Longer Journeys
Fuel stations are available in and around Berat and along principal routes. Refuel before travelling towards remote areas and keep Albanian lek as a backup payment method.
Confirm the car's fuel type and return policy at collection. If the wrong fuel is added, do not start the engine; contact the rental supplier immediately.
For countryside or mountain journeys, carry water, a charged phone and suitable clothing. Check weather, daylight and road conditions before departure.
The Berat–Përmet Route and Osum Canyon
Route planning south and southeast of Berat requires particular care. Navigation applications may propose roads through Osum Canyon or the SH74 mountain section as a shorter route towards Përmet.
Localrent identifies both the road through Osum Canyon and the relevant SH74 route between Berat and Përmet as prohibited for ordinary rental cars. These sections can be unpaved, narrow and unsuitable, and rental protection may not apply.
If travelling from Berat towards Përmet:
- Do not rely on the shortest route suggested by an app.
- Ask the supplier to confirm the complete permitted itinerary.
- Do not drive through Osum Canyon or use the prohibited SH74 section.
- Do not assume an SUV makes the route permitted.
- Use the approved paved alternative identified by the supplier.
- Allow additional time for the longer permitted route.
Visiting a permitted viewpoint or paved approach near the canyon is not the same as driving through it. Confirm exactly where the approved road ends before departure.
Tomorr Mountain and Unpaved Roads
Standard rental cars should remain on permitted paved roads. Roads and tracks around mountain areas can be rough, steep and outside normal rental protection. Localrent lists Tomorr Mountain National Park among areas where ordinary rental-car access is restricted or prohibited.
Before any mountain excursion:
- ask whether the complete route is permitted;
- obtain written approval when required;
- never assume four-wheel drive includes off-road permission;
- check weather and current access conditions;
- use a local transfer or specialist service when the road is not approved.
Damage to tyres, wheels, suspension or the underside may be excluded when a car is driven on an unauthorised road.
Places to Visit in and Around Berat
Berat Castle
The castle is one of the city's defining landmarks and contains an inhabited historic district, religious buildings and viewpoints. Park appropriately and explore its stone lanes on foot.
Mangalem
Mangalem is known for its closely arranged white houses and many windows rising along the hillside. Its narrow historic streets are better suited to walking than unnecessary driving.
Gorica and Gorica Bridge
Gorica sits across the Osum River from Mangalem. The historic bridge and neighbourhood can be included in a walking route from the centre. Park without obstructing residents or pedestrian access.
Onufri Iconographic Museum
The museum is located within the castle area and presents an important collection of Albanian religious art. Check current opening information and allow for walking over uneven stone surfaces.
Apollonia Archaeological Park
Apollonia can be included in a journey between Berat, Fier and the Adriatic coast. Use main paved roads and verify current visitor information before departure.
Vlorë
Vlorë can be combined with Berat as part of a central and southern Albania itinerary. If you want to return the car there, select Vlorë as the return location at the beginning of the search and confirm any one-way charge.
Osum Canyon
Osum Canyon is a major natural attraction in the wider region, but driving restrictions are essential. Do not drive through the prohibited canyon route in an ordinary rental car. Confirm a permitted paved approach or use an organised excursion.
Wineries and Villages Around Berat
The region includes wineries and rural destinations outside the city. Confirm opening arrangements, use designated parking and avoid drinking alcohol before driving. Some final access roads may require checking with the venue and rental supplier.
One-Way Car Rental from Berat
Some suppliers may permit collection in Berat and return in Tirana, Tirana International Airport, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë or another supported location. Availability and charges depend on the selected car, dates and route.
Enter the different pickup and return locations before searching. Do not make a same-location reservation and assume the return point can be changed later without approval.
Cross-Border Travel
Do not take the vehicle into Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Greece or another country without advance written approval for the exact car.
Cross-border travel may require:
- a vehicle that permits international travel;
- written supplier authorisation;
- an added cross-border option;
- international insurance or a Green Card;
- additional documents and fees.
List every country you intend to visit. Permission for one border does not automatically cover another.
When Should You Book?
Availability may narrow during busy travel periods, particularly for automatic cars, family vehicles, one-way rentals and offers with special deposit or payment conditions. Book in advance when a specific feature matters to you.
Do not rely on fixed published daily prices. Live rates depend on dates, duration, vehicle class, demand, extras and supplier conditions. The booking catalogue should display current offers.
